Basic Sewing Course

Terug naar Nederlands

Are you a beginner or advanced sewer who just received their own sewing machine, or do you already have experience but find yourself stuck on advanced projects? Join a sewing course at Handwerkstudio Leiden!

During the six-week sewing course you learn everything about working with the sewing machine, crossing patterns and following pattern instructions. New sewers follow the beginner program where we make a bag, a pillowcase and a pouch to practice stitching, buttonholes and zippers. Advanced sewers can bring their own project to class, i.e. a Simplicity or Burda pattern. In short you will always sew on your level in a mixed group.

Special note to non-Dutch speakers & expats:

Your course leader Mardie is experienced in both Dutch and English sewing terminology. During the course you can choose wether you want English or Dutch terminology. You will usually join other Dutch sewers so a sewing course is an excellent way to practice your Dutch and connect to fellow creative Leidenaren.

Hi, I am Mardie and I’ve been sewing since I was 15 years old. When I first started out I mainly sewed small things and costumes for my friends to attend Renaissance Fairs. During college I was approached to teach 1 evening class at Handwerkstudio Leiden. I ended up taking on the entire studio with 2 colleagues and I’ve been teaching how to sew ever since!

I am definitely not an old-fashioned seamstress and I work with modern techniques and natural lines. Sewing class is about gaining confidence in your work and learning to tackle problems in creative ways. Together we will work on your techniques and habits to be able to sew better.

See you in sewing class!

~ Mardie
