Memory quilts are a beautiful sentiment to cherished moments of the past. They are a way to transform worn and aged textiles into something that can be used, passed down, and appreciated in a new form. Students bring those things that evoke emotion and nostalgia for them- baby clothes, or the old belongings of a loved one, for example, and learn to create their own quilt that evokes the feeling of these memories. Students are encouraged to improvise their designs to see where these feelings will take them in the shapes that they create. Alternately, templates can be provided for those who prefer some guidance.
The course will cover the basics of patchwork quilting : cutting + assembling the top, basting, quilting, and binding.
Materials required: sentimental textiles from home (old clothing, home textiles, etc), additional fabric ( only if you need more or would like to add a colour), binding, batting & backing fabric (should be purchased after top is assembled to determine size – will be discussed in 1st class), thread, & medium weight fusible interfacing (only required if your fabric has any stretch)
